2025 Department of Materials Science and Engineering Student/Postdoc Awards

Congratulations to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering students, and postdoctoral students, who have been recognized in receiving the following awards.

Top row left to right:

Chuyi Pan, Amelia Pilot and Vivek Nair, R.M. Brick Award.  The R. M. Brick Award is named for the first chairman of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and is awarded to the graduating senior(s) who have demonstrated, through a combination of academic performance, effort, and personal qualities, that he or she will be a credit to the Department, the School, and the University.

Vivek Nair, The Stephen Goff award. The Stephen Goff award goes to a senior who has shown great leadership and who best exemplifies the spirit of Penn’s performing arts community.

Second row, left to right:

Victoria Xu, and Julia Dase, Penn Engineering Exceptional Service Award.  The Penn Engineering Exceptional Service Award is given to recognize and honor outstanding students for their service to the University.

Julia Dase, The Jaros Baum and Bolles Award.  The Jaros and Bolles Award is awarded to a junior or senior from Penn Engineering who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing women in engineering.

Tuna Sagdan, The Manfred Altman Memorial Award. The Manfred Altman Memorial Award, founded in recognition of the outstanding qualities possessed by Professor Manfred Altman, is given annually to the freshman or sophomore in engineering who has best demonstrated initiative, innovation, and ingenuity in his or her studies.

Third row, left to right:

Benjamin Sailors, Nina Gao, Hugo Otto Wolf Memorial Prize. The Hugo Otto Wolf Memorial Prize, founded by Otto C. Wolf in memory of his son, is awarded to the member(s) of the senior class in each department of the School of Engineering and Applied Science who, during the senior year, by the thoroughness and originality of his or her work, meets with the greatest approval of the professors in charge.

Nina Gao. MSE Undergrad and MEAM Master’s Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. The Outstanding Teaching Award is presented to student(s) who have demonstrated significant contributions as a teaching assistant in one or more courses.

Peter Biazianos, The Albert P. Godsho Engineering Prize. The Albert P. Godsho Engineering Prize is awarded to the graduating senior in the School of Engineering and Applied Science who has been selected by the faculty as having displayed the best grasp of the mathematical principles underlying the profession of engineering.

Fourth row, left to right:

Nafisa Bangura, WEF InFLOW Award. The WEF InFLOW (Water Environment Federation Introducing Future Leaders to Opportunities in Water) identifies scholars enrolled in undergraduate/​graduate degree programs.

Rishika Mehavarnam, Hagan International Scholar Award. The Hagan Scholarship is given with the opportunity to obtain a four-year college education and graduate debt free. It also provides each recipient with a practical understanding of important life skills not typically covered in the school curriculum.

Puyuan Liu, Outstanding Academic Award. The Outstanding Academic Award is provided to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and dedication to their studies.

Fifth row, left to right:

Ying Guo, Outstanding Teaching Award. The Outstanding Teaching Award is presented to student(s) who have demonstrated significant contributions as a teaching assistant in one or more courses.

Shangsong Li, The Geoffrey Belton Graduate Fellowship Award.  The Geoffrey Belton Graduate Fellowship Award is given to a PhD student in her/his 3rd year of study who has made superior and significant contributions to her/his field of PhD study.

Tianwei Wu, S. J. Stein Prize. The S. J. Stein Prize is awarded to a PhD or MSE degree recipient for superior achievement in the field of new or unique materials or applications for materials in electronics. This prize acknowledges that achievement and encourages continued interest in this important field. This award is made possible by a generous donation from the S. J. Stein family.

Sixth Row, left to right:

Antonio Martinez, Vinayak Vinayak, Intel Award. The Intel Graduate Fellowship recognizes outstanding contributions to materials science and is awarded to fourth-year PhD student(s).

Kunyu Wang, The Research Corporation for Science Advancement Fellows program. The Research Corporation for Science Advancement Fellows program is designed to support the development of future faculty in the physical sciences through job search preparation, professional development, and community building.
